This 10-credit core module involves in-depth investigation of a specific topic in western classical music. Each year the module will be delivered according to staff research interests and/or current repertoire being performed in the Conservatoire’s Artistic Planning programme or by the National Companies.

On completion of the module, we expect you to be able to:

·         To stimulate critical debate on historical and analytical aspects of a work

·         To develop your critical awareness and understanding of the relationship between theory and practice

·         To guide you through the stages of formulating, proposing, researching and developing an extended essay

To prepare you for your research project in Year 4.
